Description

Qualifications

Basic function

This position provides engineering services and technical assistance to internal and external clients on a variety of civil projects and environmental compliance functions managed by the Support Services department and ensures corporate compliance in all environmental matters. This position will report to the Principal Environmental Engineer. This is a temporary 2-year position.

Principle responsibilities

  • Assist the Principal Environmental Engineer in the monitoring, assessment or remediation of manufactured gas, substation, spill and underground storage tank sites. Coordinate and direct consultants and communicate with state and federal regulatory agencies. Assist with spill responses and any follow-up sampling and remediation.
  • Assist the Principal Environmental Engineer with support of hydroelectric operation and maintenance assignments from the Engineering and Operations Department. Secure state and federal permits required for construction or maintenance projects and oversee projects to assure all requirements are met.
  • Assist Environmental Program Manager by tracking the status of permitted (transmission/distribution) construction projects and maintain databases of permitted facilities. Ensure proper paperwork at the review, permitting and construction stages. Inspect construction sites for compliance with permit conditions and conduct post-construction inspections.
  • Work closely with the other departments to introduce, develop, and implement new programs to improve ongoing Corporate Compliance efforts to include stormwater, solid waste and recycling programs.
  • Assist Support Services Principal Engineer and staff with building/facility operation and maintenance projects including lead based paint and asbestos management projects.
  • Assist Hazardous Materials Specialists with the proper storage, shipment and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in environmental or civil engineering, an engineering intern certification (successful completion of the fundamentals of engineering examination EIT) and 2-5 years experience in civil or environmental engineering. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Project, ArcView, AutoCAD software applications and other engineering systems.

Excellent technical, analytical, problem resolution, decision making and verbal and written communication skills are required. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, team player with a results orientation and the ability to multi-task and to see the larger picture while focusing on detailed information.
